"I believe that spiritual maturity is not the ability to see the extraordinary, but the ability to see the ordinary through God's eyes. Consequently, no matter how wonderful our experience or encounter is with God, the test of it's worth is in the fruit it bears in our lives and the lives of others. "

Why is there hunger?

With more than 40 million acres of America covered in lawns, turf grass is our largest irrigated crop.

When addressing the issue of hunger here are some facts that should be considered. If we were to take only ½ of this 40,000,000 acres and devoted it to food production we would produce 212,420,000,000lbs. of food annually. The average American eats 1,500lbs. of food in a year. So then, if everyone in this country sacrificed only ½ of their lawn we could produce enough food to feed 141,613,333 people. To put that in perspective that is the entire population of Russia, or roughly 15% of the people on the entire continent of Africa. Think about it, if we all grew vegetable gardens instead of lawns we could grow enough food to feed almost ½ of the people in North America, or every starving man, woman and child in Africa with enough food left over to feed an additional 83,226,666 people. Just some food for thought, or is it some thought for food?

  1. Wow that's a pretty heavy thought. Or better yet we could all simplify a bit here in the States, grow our own food and move in with each other if need be, and CANCEL THE THIRD WORLD DEBT. Then some of these impoverished nations could educate and equip their people to be able to provide for themselves. Let's get started!!

OK, so maybe it's not that easy...

  2. I say we start in Nikki and I's yard man - I HATE mowing the weeds and what little grass is there anyways, and I refuse to plant grass just to keep up with my neighbors. We got a big tiller - lets rip it up! Good word Alex...I'll drink to that. We've got plenty of room thats fo' sho'...

  3. Hey, if you're going to grow in your front yard, I recommend hops and barley added to your crops. Then, along with chickens, you could sell beer! I love you guys! Keep going!

  4. Sounds great to me! Lawns are also an incredible amount of work for very little payoff other than the aesthetic value (and we've been trained to view them as appealing, really). I mean, sure, a group of kids may play frisbe or throw-and-catch a couple times a year, but seriously.

  5. So, if households took to producing their own food, then how would that affect big business? Big business would have to market to other countries, but it wants to make a profit, which it probably couldn't do with the poor, starving nations. So, producing our own food would make big business go kaput (which I'm fine with), but how could we actually get additional food that we'd grow to the people who need it?
